People have always been interested in their genealogy, first as a means to reinforce belongingness to a clan and also to provide information regarding their medical histories.  Especially now, with advancements in technology, genealogy and family tree software have made the research process much easier and accurate, hence the increase in popularity. Recently science has also discovered the ability to interpret the human genome and now our DNA can almost be traced back to Adam.

Genetic genealogy may be the new kid on the scientific block, but its psychological and spiritual components were always acknowledged in ancient cultures. It only appears to be new because of its modern re-packaging:it is now called psychogenealogy, a term coined by Anne Ancelin-Schützenberger.
